Whiteheads are closed comedones -- small, flesh-colored or white bumps that form when a hair follicle becomes fully blocked by oil and dead skin cells beneath a thin layer of skin. Unlike blackheads, the pore stays closed, so the trapped material never oxidizes or darkens.
